Mexico 1736-Mo MF 4 escudos
The specimen shown was lot 165 in Aureo y Calicó sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 2,200 € (about US$3,416 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"Felipe V (1700-1746). 1736. México. MF. 4 escudos. Bella. Parte de brillo original. Rara y más así. MBC+/EBC-. (Philip V (1700-46), four escudos of 1736, Mexico City mint. Handsome, partial luster, rare, about extremely fine.)"
All four escudos of this king are rare and expensive. This type was struck 1732-46 and is the only type featuring the bust of Philip V. The other Latin American mints (Lima, Potosi) were still striking cobs, so the only other mints using this portrait were in Spain proper.
Reported Mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.53 g, 0.917 fine gold, .399 troy oz AGW.
