Mexico 1665-Mo P 4 reales
This specimen was lot 71670 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $528. The catalog description[1] noted, "MEXICO. Cob 4 Reales, 1665-Mo. Mexico City Mint, Assayer P. Philip IV. PCGS Genuine--Chopmark, EF Details. This deeply toned Cob displays a mintmark, assayer, denomination, and just enough of the date to identify it definitively. The reverse shows a pleasing central cross and a tiny chopmark on the periphery. A charming piece despite the rather irregular planchet. From the Pat Johnson Collection." The SCWC mentions this type for 1621-67 and notes 1634-65 with assayer "P". Unlike those of Bolivia, few of these early cobs have legible dates.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 13.54 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 13.66 g.
