Mexico 1637-Mo P 8 reales
This specimen was lot 149 in Sedwick sale 34 (Winter Park, FL, November 2023), where it sold for $1,140. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mexico City, Mexico, cob 8 reales, 1637 (P), denomination 8 over 4, very rare, NGC VF details / sea salvaged / Concepcion (Shipwreck Blue Label). Very broad and atypically roundish flan with very bold full denomination OO (vertically) clearly punched over a 4, also with full 7 of date, nearly full shield and cross but much peripheral flatness, lightly toned Fine with virtually no corrosion. Recovered from: Concepcion, sunk in 1641 off Hispaniola." The vast majority of Mexican cobs lack dates, so that examples with legible dates bring four times those without. Assayer "P" served 1634-65.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 25.90 grams.
