Messerano in 1786, after its absorption by Sardinia

This specimen was lot 1758 in Jean Elsen sale 149 (Brussels, December 2021), where it sold for €600 (about US$813 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALIE, MESSERANO, Pier Luca Fieschi (1528-1548), AR cornuto. D/ Ecu heaumé, cimé d'une aigle. R/ Saint Théoneste à cheval à d., ten. un étendard. Rare. Très Beau. (Italy, marquisate of Messerano, Peter Lucas Fieschi, 1528-48, silver cornuto. Obverse: helmeted arms crested with an eagle; reverse: St. Theonestus mounted to right, bearing a standard. Rare, Very Fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 4527 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 550 CHF (about US$736 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted, "ITALY Messerano, Pier Luca Fieschi, 1528-1548. Cornuto o. J., Messerano. In die Umschrift reichendes Wappen, darüber Helm mit Krone und geflügeltem Adler nach links als Helmzier. Rv. Heiliger Teonestus mit geschulterter Kreuzfahne zu Pferd nach rechts. Gutes sehr schön (Pier Luca Fieschi, 1528-1548, undated cornuto, Messerano mint. obverse: arms surmounted by a crowned helmet with an eagle's head crest, facing left; reverse: St. Theonestus mounted right. Good very fine.). Exemplar aus Spink Taisei, Zürich, Auktion 52, Lot. 1024." Messerano is on the Milanese side of the border between Savoy/Sardinia and Milan. The marquis sold his domain to Sardinia in 1767. St. Theonestus was a Roman Christian who was martyred in Vercelli around 313 A.D.
