Messerano in 1786, after its absorption by Sardinia

This specimen was lot 1217 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 2,600 CHF (about US$3,156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | Messerano. Ludovico II. Fieschi, 1528-1532. Testone o. J. Selten. Vorzüglich-FDC. NGC MS62. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Italy, marquisate of Masserano, Louis Fieschi II, 1528-32, undated teston. Rare, Extremely fine-uncirculated, Extraordinary condition.)"

The Fieschi were a family which produced numerous high ranking churchmen, including several cardinals and a pope (Adrian V, 1276). This particular scion is obscure. Messerano is on the Milanese side of the border between Savoy/Sardinia and Milan.
