This specimen was lot 22241 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2019), where it sold for $79. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. Melbourne. T. Stokes Copper Penny Token, 1862. EXTREMELY FINE. Obverse: Eight line inscription; Reverse: Emu, ADVANCE VICTORIA below. Pleasing quality throughout with attractive brown surfaces that are free from significant marks. A SCARCE numismatic-related token issue." Filling a shortage of coinage in the expanding economy, private tokens flourished until finally being banned in the 1870's. The SCWC lists nearly three hundred varieties. Today most are very scarce.
