Morpeth (1863) 3 pence token KM-Tn34
This specimen was lot 20149 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $3,360. The catalog description[1] noted, "AUSTRALIA. New South Wales. Morpeth. 3 Pence Silver, ND (1863). PCGS AU-53. Estimated mintage of only 400 pieces. According to Renniks who assigned an R9 rarity only an estimated 20 examples are thought to exist. VERY RARE, one of the classics of the series. Issued by James Campbell of Morpeth, New South Wales. Moderate wear consistent for the grade with minor debris amongst the devices. Light attractive tone. A real treat for the specialist." Filling a shortage of coinage in the expanding economy, private tokens flourished until finally being banned in the 1870's. The SCWC lists nearly three hundred varieties. Today most are very scarce.
Recorded mintage: est. 400.
Specification: silver.
