Sincona sale 11, lot 922

This specimen was lot 922 in Sincona sale 11 (Zürich, May 2013), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Herzogtum, Friedrich, 1756-1785. 2 Taler 1782. Minimale Kratzer. Vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick (1756-85), two thaler of 1785, slightly weak strike, extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin lies on the Baltic Sea north of Berlin and east of Hamburg. It is one of the poorer parts of Germany and coinage from this locale is scanty and rare. It followed other north German states in issuing multiple thalers in gold rather than ducats.

Recorded mintage: 1,625.

Specification: 3.12 g, 0.875 fine gold, this specimen 3.09 g.

Catalog reference: Kunzel 340, Fr-1723, KM 210.
