Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1792 2 thaler Fr-1724
This specimen was lot 29762 in Heritage sale 3042 (Long Beach, September 2015), where it sold for $3,055. The catalog description[1] noted, "Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Friedrich Franz I gold 2 Taler 1792 MS63 NGC. Seldom-offered in the marketplace and virtually unseen at this level of Mint State, the current offering absolutely engages the eye with boldly-struck design features and glowing, mark-free surfaces. An altogether alluring example of this singular issue, captivating from all angles, and with undeniable flash." The duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin lies on the Baltic Sea north of Berlin and east of Hamburg. It is one of the poorer parts of Germany and coinage from this locale is scanty and rare. It followed other north German states in issuing multiple thalers in gold rather than ducats.
