Künker sale 335, lot 4148

This specimen was lot 4148 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €180 (about US$236 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MECKLENBURG, MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN, HERZOGTUM. Friedrich, 1756-1785. 32 Schilling 1764, Schwerin. Feine Patina, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Frederick, 1756-85, 32 schilling of 1764, Schwerin mint. Fine patina, extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin lies on the Baltic Sea north of Berlin and east of Hamburg. It is one of the poorer parts of Germany and coinage from this locale is scanty and rare. This type was struck 1763-64 along with a gulden. The gulden was 17.32 g, 0.750 fine silver, which works out to about 30 schilling.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 18.34 g, 0.750 fine silver, this specimen 18.33 g.

Catalog reference: KM 209, J. 9; Kunzel 341 B/a.
