Mecklenburg-Gustrow 1577 thaler Dav-9556
This specimen was lot 5808 in Künker sale 354 (Osnabrück, Germany, September 2021), where it sold for €4,200 (about US$5,845 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MECKLENBURG-GÜSTROW, HERZOGTUM, Ulrich III. 1555-1603. Reichstaler 1577, Grevesmühlen. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Ungewöhnlich gut ausgeprägtes Exemplar, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Gustrow, Ulrich III, 1555-1603, thaler of 1577, Grevesmühlen mint. Scarce, especially in this quality, possibly the finest known, about extremely fine.)"
This is one of many closely related varieties of thalers issued by this ruler, listed but not photographed in the SCWC. The states of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and Mecklenburg-Gustrow were traded within the same family. The dukes of Mecklenburg-Gustrow included Albrecht VII (1503-47), Johann Albrecht (1547-55), Ulrich III (1555-1603), Carl (1603-10), Johann Albrecht II (1610-28, 1632-36) and Gustav Adolf (1636-95). The state was extinct on Gustav Adolf's death. Never a prosperous state, Mecklenburg issues are few and scarce.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 29.00 g.
