Mecklenburg-Schwerin 1613 3 thaler Dav-LS356
This specimen was lot 4147 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabrück, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €70,000 (about US$91,602 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"MECKLENBURG, MECKLENBURG-SCHWERIN, HERZOGTUM. Adolf Friedrich, 1610-1658. Dreifacher Reichstaler 1613, Gadebusch. Dreifacher Glückstaler. ADOLPHVS · FRIDRICH : V : G : G : HERT : Z : MEC : F : Z : W : G : Z : S : D : L : R : V : S : H : Zainhaken (Münzmeisterzeichen des Simon Lüdemann, Münzmeister in Gadebusch 1612-1619) Geharnischtes Hüftbild r. mit Feldbinde und großem Kragen zwischen zwei Vorhängen//FORTVNE . IN . FORTVNE . FORT VNE . ANNO . 1613 Fortuna mit Segel steht v. v. auf geflügelter Kugel, den Kopf nach r. gewandt, r. Baum, im Hintergrund Feld mit zwei nach l. springenden Reitern. Sehr selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Prachtexemplar. Hübsche Patina, leichte Verfärbung am Rand der Porträtseite, vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, Adolf Frederick, 1610-58, triple thaler of 1613, Gadebusch mint. Obverse: half length armored bust with sash and large collar between two curtains; reverse: Fortune stands, head right. Very rare, especially in this condition, cabinet piece, handsome patina, lightly cleaned on the obverse, extremely fine.)"
The same dies were used to strike a five thaler (Dav-LS354), quadruple thaler (Dav-LS355), double thaler (Dav-LS357) and 1½ thaler (Dav-LS-358), all rare and expensive.
