Mauritius 1990 rupee
The first specimen was lot 72115 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2020), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. Rupee, 1990. Llantrisant Mint. PCGS SPECIMEN-62 Gold Shield. Wholly blazing and brilliant, this Gem offers quality for the type that is seldom encountered. Not surprisingly, just three have been seen finer at PCGS. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." The second specimen was lot 73567 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, June 2021), where it sold for $65. The catalog description[2] noted, "MAURITIUS. Rupee, 1990. PCGS SPECIMEN-66 Gold Shield. Exceeded in the PCGS census by a sole specimen, this glistening Gem presents the bust of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the first prime minister of Mauritius. Ex: Kings Norton Mint Collection." Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900-85) was a politician who organized independence for Mauritius and served as its first leader 1968-82. His portrait appears on Mauritian coinage for 1987-99, including this rupee.
