Mauritius 1978 1000 rupees

CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 6427

This specimen was lot 6427 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $1,225. The catalog description^[1] noted, "MAURITIUS, Commonwealth. 1968-1992. Proof AV 100 Rupees. Commemorating the tenth anniversary of independence. Dated 1978. Bust of Prime Minister Seewoosagur Ramgoolam facing slightly right / Assembly building. From the Drewry Family Collection." This coin was denominated 1,000 rupees, not 100 rupees. It was struck to the standard of a British gold two pounds. Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (1900-85) was a politician who organized independence for Mauritius and served as its first leader 1968-82.

Recorded mintage: 1,000 plus 1,016 proofs.

Specification: 15.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 28 mm diameter, 16.36 g, 12 hr axis.
