Stack's Bowers 2014 ANA sale, lot 1216

This specimen was lot 1216 in Stack's Bowers ANA auction (Chicago, August 2014), where it sold for $1,292.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 1,000 Rupees, 1975. NGC PROOF-68 ULTRA CAMEO. Conservation series, Mauritius flycatcher. From a mintage of 716 pieces." Two cents were struck for Mauritius 1911-78. Larger denominations, including the quarter, half and one rupee were not struck for Mauritius until 1934. Smaller denominations had been minted as far back as the 1870's. The island remained under British rule until 1968 and part of the Commonwealth until 1978.

Recorded mintage: 1,966 plus 716 proofs.

Specification: 33.43 g, 0.900 fine gold (same standard as a United States double eagle).
