Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 71371

This specimen was lot 71371 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it sold for $90. The catalog description[1] noted, "MAURITIUS. 1/4 Rupee, 1938. NGC MS-62. This nicely preserved uncirculated example boast[s] a strong strike displaying light attractive mottled patina." This type was struck 1938 only and is the second quarter rupee struck for the colony. The next issue, in 1946, was in 0.500 fine silver (KM 18a). Smaller denominations had been minted as far back as the 1870's. Mauritius remained under British rule until 1968.

Recorded mintage: 2,000,000 + proofs.
