Mansfeld-Eisleben 1647 thaler Dav-6938
This specimen was lot 2231 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,531 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · MANSFELD-EISLEBEN, GRAFSCHAFT Johann Georg II., 1619-1647. Reichstaler 1647, Eisleben, auf seinen Tod. RR Hübsche Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler am Rand, sehr schön-vorzüglich. Exemplar der Slg. The Horserider Collection of a Japanese Gentleman, Auktion Hess-Divo 339, Zürich 2020, Nr. 316. (Germany, county of Mansfeld-Eisleben, John George II, 1619-47, thaler of 1647, Eisleben mint, on his death. Very rare, handsome patina, minor planchet defects on the edge, very fine to extremely fine.)"
Mansfeld and its subdivisions were counties of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers. This branch survived until 1710; the county was annexed to Saxony when the last line died out in 1780.
