Mansfeld-Artern 1626-AK 2 thaler Dav-6961
This specimen was lot 30257 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $9,600. The catalog description[1] noted,
"German States: Mansfeld-Artern. Volrat VI, Wolfgang III & Johann Georg II 2 Taler 1626-AK XF45 NGC, Eisleben mint. Anton Koburger as mintmaster. Decidedly rare as a type, not least in this technical quality. The overall appearance of this offering, particularly the obverse, appears finer than the given designation, and quite clearly surpasses the Tornau plate coin in both eye appeal and preservation. We have only been able to locate two other examples sold at auction in recent years, and no others are noted in the Deutsches Münzpreis-Jahrbuch. From the Paramount Collection."
Mansfeld-Artern was a county of utmost insignificance except for its silver mines which provided the material for an abundance of thalers, tho double thalers are rare. There were several co-rulers; the line went extinct in 1780.
