This specimen was lot 46974 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Chicago, August 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MALTA. Silver 5 Pounds Piefort, 1988. PCGS SPECIMEN-69. KM-P4." The pound sterling was introduced to Malta by the British in 1825. On independence in 1972, the Maltese word "lira" (plural "liri") was adopted altho the English word "pound" continued for some years. The euro superseded the Maltese lira on January 1, 2008.
Recorded mintage: 5,000 plus 2,000 proofs plus an unknown number of pieforts.
Specification: 28.28 g, 0.925 fine silver. The piefort is 56.56 g.
