Sincona sale 47, lot 1954

This specimen was lot 1954 in Sincona sale 47 (Zürich, May 2018), where it sold for 200 CHF (about US$240 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"MALTA, Republik seit 1974. 5 Liri 1993. 400 Jahrfeier der Universität. Selten. Nur 1000 Exemplare geprägt. Polierte Platte. FDC. (republic of Malta, since 1974, five liri of 1993, on the 400th anniversary of the university. Rare. Only 1000 pieces struck, Choice Proof.)"

Another five pounds (KM 102) was issued in 1992 honoring the Central Bank of Malta. The pound sterling was introduced to Malta by the British in 1825. On independence in 1972, the Maltese word "lira" (plural "liri") was adopted altho the English word "pound" continued for some years. The euro superseded the Maltese lira on January 1, 2008.
