This specimen is the first coin issued by Mali as part of the F.A.O. series. The region was formerly French Sudan and this coin is a product of the Paris mint. The coin shown features maize, an American plant now grown throughout Africa. This coin was accompanied by a fifty francs.

Recorded mintage: 23,000,000.

Specification: 8 g, nickel brass, 27.8 mm diameter.
