Mauritania 1990 ouguiya rev DLSR.jpg

Mauritania was part of French West Africa until she obtained independence in 1960. Altho of considerable extent, most of the nation lies in the Sahara desert and is not arable. The country remains poor and backward, subject to frequent coups and military revolts. The CFA franc was used there until 1973, when the ouguiya was adopted. Coins were struck in denominations of 1/5, one, five, ten and twenty ougiyas. The ten ougiyas shown here was struck 1973-74, 1981-83, 1987, 1990-99 and 2003-04. In 1982, US$1 = 51.3 ouguiya; at present (April 2024), US$1 = 39.7 ouguiya but the new ouguiya is worth ten old ouguiyas.
