Malaysia obtained her independence in 1963, being a federation of the former British colonies in southeast Asia (Malaya, Singapore, Sarawak and British North Borneo). Singapore left in 1965 after interracial riots made it clear that Chinese were not welcome. This type was struck 1967-73, 1976-83 and 1987-88 in large quantities. It was redesigned in 1989 (KM 52).
