Mainz 1501 goldgulden Fr-1630
This specimen was lot 2249 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €650 (about US$853 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF BERTHOLD VON HENNEBERG, 1484-1504. Die Münzstätte Mainz. Goldgulden 1501, Mainz. + BERT’ - + ARC + - + EP’+ mO’ + Spitzer Dreipass, in der Mitte vierfeldiges Wappen(Mainz/Römhild/Henneberg/Mainz), in den Ecken die Schilde von Köln, Trier und Pfalz//mOnE’ + nO’ - AVRE’ + (Jahreszahl l70l) Christus mit erhobener Rechten und Buch thront v. v. in gotischem Gestühl, unten Wappen von Mainz. GOLD. R Kl. Henkelspur, sehr schön. Erworben 2012 von der Münzenhandlung Johannes Diller, München. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Berthold of Henneberg, 1484-1504, goldgulden of 1501, Mainz mint. Obverse: pointed tripod, in the center a quartered arms of Mainz, Römhild, Henneberg and Mainz, the shields of Cologne, Trier and Bavaria around; reverse: Christ enthroned under a Gothic dais, holding a book and raising his hand in blessing, below, the arms of Mainz. Rare, small mount mark, very fine.)"
This is the second and scarcer of Berthold's goldgulden. All are dated. Friedberg reports dates of 1491-1504. Berthold led the reform faction within the empire, attempting to abolish private war and transfer the emperor's powers to a council of electors. Failing in this, he resigned the imperial chancery in 1503.
