Mainz 1494 goldgulden Fr-1630
This specimen was lot 308 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 6,500 CHF (about US$8,145 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND | Mainz, Erzbistum, Berthold von Henneberg 1484-1508. Goldgulden 1494, Mainz. Äusserst selten. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Berthold von Henneberg 1484-1508, goldgulden of 1494. Extremely rare, Very fine-extremely fine.)"
The archbishops of Mainz were prolific issuers of gold coins in the late middle ages but output dropped in the late fifteenth century, never to recover. This early dated type is listed for 1491-1504.
