Künker sale 404, lot 2211

This specimen was lot 2211 in Künker sale 404 (Osnabrück, March 2024), where it sold for €320 (about US$420 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DAS ERZBISTUM MAINZ. ERZBISCHOF DIETRICH I. SCHENK VON ERBACH, 1434-1459. Die Münzstätte Bingen. Weißpfennig (Groschen) o. J. (1454-1456), Bingen. St. Petrus mit Kreuzstab und Schlüssel v. v. in gotischem Gestühl, unten Familienwappen des Erzbischofs//Spitzer Dreipass, in der Mitte vierfeldiges Wappen Mainz/Erbach, in den Ecken die Schilde von Köln, Trier und Bayern für Pfalz. Sehr schön. Exemplar der Lagerliste Heinrich Pilartz 61, Köln, Dezember 1961, Nr. 159 und der Slg. Eberhard Link, Auktion Fritz Rudolf Künker 322, Osnabrück 2019, Nr. 505. (Germany, archbishopric of Mainz, Dietrich I Schenk of Erbach, 1434-59, undated groschen, circa 1454-56, Bingen mint. Obverse: St. Peter with crozier and keys under a Gothic dais next to the archbishop's arms; reverse: quartered arms of Mainz and Erbach in a pointed trilobe, in the corners the shields of Cologne, Trier and Bavaria (for Pfalz). Very fine.)"

The Weißpfennig was struck by the archbishops of Trier, Mainz and Cologne at Coblenz, starting in the late fourteenth century. It became popular because of its good alloy. It was eventually copied by numerous petty princes along the Rhine.
