Stephen Album sale 50, lot 2601

This specimen was lot 2601 in Stephen Album sale 50 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description[1] noted, "MADRAS PRESIDENCY: AE 1/2 dub (10 cash), 1807, East India Company issue, obverse in Persian, reverse in Tamil and Telugu, date on the obverse followed by the Persian word isuvi which means 'by Jesus,' i.e., 'Christian'; some weakness, VF-XF, R, ex Solar Collection." The Madras mint, a facility of the British East India Company, minted pagodas and rupees under license from the Mughal emperor since the seventeenth century. This series, which included five, twenty and forty cash, was probably the last made locally; thereafter, company officials ordered coins from Birmingham. This is likely a pattern; the regular issue (KM 326) states "X CASH" on the obverse.
