Macao 1952 5 avos
The first specimen was lot 73129 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, June 2020), where it sold for $156. The catalog description[1] noted, "MACAU. 5 Avos, 1952. NGC MS-66 Red. Exceeded in the NGC census by just a sole example, this blazing specimen presents tremendously dazzling red surfaces blistering with luster." This issue was minted in Lisbon for the Portuguese colony of Macao. This date, 1952, is the inaugural year for coins minted especially for Macao. The coin is fairly common tho a one-year type. The denomination was issued again in 1967. Unlike the other colonies of Portugal, there was never any agitation for independence but the colony was returned to China in 1999.
