Sincona sale 20, lot 3744

This specimen was lot 3744 in Sincona sale 20 (Zürich, October 2014), where it sold for CHF 9,000 (about US$11,279 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "[Luzern.] 20 Franken 1807. Fast FDC. (choice uncirculated.)" The coinage of the canton of Luzern (sometimes spelled Lucerne) is not so common and this rare issue is no exception. Coinage ceased altogether in 1846 with an issue of five rappen. At this time, 10 rappen = one batzen and 10 batzen = one frank and 4 franken = one thaler.
