Sincona sale 64, lot 3403

This specimen was lot 3403 in Sincona sale 64 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 1,000 CHF (about US$1,253 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SWITZERLAND | Lucerne | Stadt und Kanton. Schilling 1604, Luzern. Von höchster Seltenheit. Schön-sehr schön. (city and canton of Luzern, schilling of 1604, Luzern mint. Of the highest rarity, Fine-very fine.)"

This type was struck 1596-1605 in many varieties of obverse and reverse legends; the 1604 is a rare date. At this time, one thaler made 36 schilling or 72 kreuzer. St. Leodegar, depicted on the reverse, made an enemy of Ebroin, mayor of the palace of Neustria, and was blinded on his orders in AD 679. This specimen was offered again as lot 4301 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,663 including buyer's fees).
