Sincona sale 95, lot 4300

This specimen was lot 4300 in Sincona sale 95 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$693 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Luzern, Stadt und Kanton, Schilling 1603, Luzern. Mindere Jahreszahl 6 - 03 seitlich des kleinen Luzernerwappens (ev. existiert noch eine Spur einer I der Jahreszahl). Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Vorzüglich. Flaue Stellen. Exemplar der Slg. Kunzmann, Auktion SINCONA 53, Zürich, Oktober 2018, Los 6390. (Switzerland, canton of Luzern, Luzern mint. Obverse: three digit date divided by the cantonal arms; the "1" may be present but not struck up. Rare in this condition, Extremely Fine, Some weakly struck areas.)"

This type was struck 1596-1605 in many varieties of obverse and reverse legends. At this time, one thaler made 36 schilling or 72 kreuzer. St. Leodegar, depicted on the reverse, made an enemy of Ebroin, mayor of the palace of Neustria, and was blinded on his orders in AD 679.
