Jean Elsen sale 164, lot 1242
JE164-1242r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1242 in Jean Elsen sale 164 (Brussels, March 2026), where it sold for €6,500 (about US$9,049 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LUXEMBOURG, Duché, Philippe IV (1621-1665), AR quart de patagon, 1632. D/ Croix de Bourgogne sous une couronne, ornée du bijou de la Toison d'or, accostée de la date. R/ Écu couronné, entouré du collier de la Toison d'or. Provient de Künker, Osnabruck, vente 72, 13 mars 2002, 2234. Extrêmement rare. Beau à Très Beau. (duchy of Luxembourg, Philip IV, 1621-65, silver quarter patagon of 1632. Obverse: Burgundian cross below a crown, jewels of the Golden Fleece below; reverse: crowned arms, Order chain around. Extremely rare, Fine - Very Fine.)"

This quarter patagon was struck at Luxembourg 1632 only and is rare. Patagons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liège and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and ducatons. A very similar coin was struck for Artois, Flanders, Brabant and Tournai. The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, reducing their appeal to collectors.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 7.03 g, 0.875 fine silver; this specimen 6,83 g.
