Livorno 1676 ongaro Fr-464
This specimen was lot 2615 in Sincona sale 87 (Zürich, October 2023), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Livorno, Cosimo III. de Medici, 1670-1723. Ongaro 1676, Firenze. Sehr schön. Gewellt. (Italy, Livorno, Cosimo III de Medici, 1670-1723, ongaro of 1676, Florence mint. Very fine, Wavy flan.)"
Five dates are listed for this type struck 1674-78 and 1691. The SCWC and Friedberg list this under Livorno, where it was made, rather than Tuscany, where it was used. Cosimo was lord of both places. The 2.35 g weight reported in the SCWC disqualifies it as a ducat; however, this specimen has a reported weight of 3.43 g, within tolerance for a ducat. Altho the ducat originated in Florence as the fiorino d'oro, this coin is named after the Hungarian ducat which it closely resembles.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: 3.49 g, 0.986 fine gold, this specimen 3.43 g.
