Stack's Bowers 2025 ANA sale, lot 42404
SB825-42404r.jpg

This specimen was lot 42404 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Oklahoma City, OK, August 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Livorno. Tollero, 1675. Cosimo III de' Medici. NGC VF Details--Corrosion. An EXTREME RARITY, this being only the third example of the date we are able to trace-the first sold by Numismatica Ars Classica in December 2006, and the second by Pandolfini Casa d'Aste in June 2017. The obverse features the elegant portrait of Cosimo III, the penultimate Duke of Tuscany from the House of Medici, and the longest reigning in Tuscan history, at 53 years. On the opposite side appears a charming and almost medallic depiction of the Old Fortress of Livorno. It need not be stressed that the noted surface issues fail to detract from the desirability and collectability of this piece, given the sheer unavailability of both dates in this two-year type. A once-in-a-decade opportunity for the connoisseur of Italian States RARITIES." This rare type was also struck in 1670. The Italian word tollero may be translated into the German word thaler or the English word dollar.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27 g, silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-A4214; KM-16.1.
