This specimen was lot 2169 in Goldberg sale 112 (Los Angeles, September 2019), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italian States: Genoa (As the Ligurian Republic). 8 Lire, 1798/1. Short lived republic created by Napoleon (1798-1805). Fasces and liberty cap behind shield in sprays. reverse: Two figures standing. Minor surface flakes. Steel grey old toning. Rare in top grades. NGC graded MS-62." Genoa was occupied by Napoleon in 1798 and made into the puppet Ligurian Republic. Genoa never recovered her independence; in 1815 it was annexed by the kingdom of Sardinia and is now part of Italy. Most of the issues of the Ligurian Republic are rare to very rare, including this one from 1798-99 and 1804.
