Jean Elsen sale 158, lot 1093

This specimen was lot 1093 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €320 (about US$416 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIEGE, Principauté, Louis de Bourbon (1456-1482), AR huitième de patard (huitième d'aidant), s.d. (vers 1477), Liège ou Hasselt. D/ + MONETA EPI LEODIENS' L'écu de Bourbon sous un briquet enflammé. R/ + SIT NOME DNI BNDICTV' Croix cantonnée de quatre lis, une rosette au centre. Extrêmement rare. Belle patine. Très Beau. Provient de la collection Piat, Dupriez, Bruxelles, vente 101, 28 novembre 1910, 231 et de la collection H. Frère, Liège, 18 février 2002. (prince-bishopric of Liège, Louis of Bourbon, 1456-82, undated silver eighth patard or eighth aidant, circa 1477, Liège or Hasselt mint. Obverse: the arms of Bourbon below a flaming firesteel; reverse: a cross cantonned with four lilies, a rosette at the center. Extremely rare, nice patina, Very Fine.)"

Louis de Bourbon was imposed upon the inhabitants of Liège by his uncle, the duke of Burgundy. He so exasperated his subjects that they expelled him three times. One of the grievances was his inveterate habit of uttering debased coin.
