SB523-72746r.jpg

This specimen was lot 72746 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $1,920. The catalog description[1] noted, "LIBERIA. 20 Dollars, 1972. PCGS PROOF-68 Deep Cameo. Serial Number: 325. Commemorating the inauguration of President Tolbert. An appealing large format gold piece with sharp Cameo contrast separating the devices and fields. There is a serial number and three other small stamps below the arms on the reverse. Considering the fact that we cannot recall offering a similar piece in over a decade, this is an intriguing option for African gold collectors." William Tolbert succeeded William Tubman as president of Liberia on Tubman's death in 1971. His assassination in 1980 plunged the country into civil war. This NCLT was struck to the module of a pre-1933 United States twenty dollars.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 33.437 g, 0.900 fine gold, 0.9675 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-7; KM-27.
