Jean Elsen sale 163, lot 2073
JE163-2073r.jpg

This specimen was lot 2073 in Jean Elsen sale 163 (Brussels, November 2025), where it sold for €1,250 (about US$1,444 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LIBÉRIA, République (1847-), AV 30 dollars, 1965. 70e anniversaire du président Tubman. 400 p. frappées. (republic of Liberia, gold thirty dollars of 1965, for the seventieth birthday of president Tubman. 400 pieces struck, Proof.)"

William V. S. Tubman was president of Liberia from 1944 until his death in 1971. Another NCLT was issued in 1970 to mark his 75th birthday. In recent years, Liberia has become known for dozens of privately struck commemoratives, produced under license from the regime. We don't know where this was struck; Liberia has no mint.

Recorded mintage: 400 proofs.

Specification: 15 g, 0.900 fine gold, 30 mm diameter, reeded edge, this specimen 14,99 g.

Catalog reference: KM 22, Fr-4.
