Künker sale 424, part of lot 593
Leuchtenberg in 1777, as part of Bavaria just south of Sulzbach

This specimen was part of lot 593 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €55 (about US$78 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · LEUCHTENBERG, LANDGRAFSCHAFT Georg III., 1531-1555. 1) Batzen 1534, Pfreimd. und 3,73 g. Münzmeister Hans Schulmeister. Bindenschild von Leuchtenberg, darüber die Jahrezahl * I534 *//Gekrönter Doppeladler. 2) Batzen 1535, Pfreimd. Münzmeister Hans Schulmeister. Bindenschild von Leuchtenberg, darüber die Jahreszahl * I535 *//Gekrönter Doppeladler. 3 Stück. Fast sehr schön und sehr schön. (Germany, landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, George III, 1531-55, batzen of 1534, Pfreimd mint. Obverse: arms of Leuchtenberg, date above; reverse: double headed eagle. About very fine. Included were two other batzen.)"

The landgrave of Leuchtenberg was a considerable power in the Upper Palatinate in the Middle Ages but never succeeded in becoming a direct suffragan of the emperor. When the dynasty lapsed in 1646, the landgraviate was annexed to Bavaria, where it remains to this day. This type is listed for 1533-35 and is the most common batzen of this state. One thaler was fifteen batzen.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 3.31-4.29 g, silver or billon, 26 mm diameter; this specimen 3,46 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB26, Friedl 92 b.
