Künker sale 424, lot 590
Leuchtenberg in 1777, as part of Bavaria just south of Sulzbach

This specimen was lot 590 in Künker Auction 424 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €440 (about US$623 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · LEUCHTENBERG, LANDGRAFSCHAFT Johann IV., 1487-1531. 10 Kreuzer 1528, Pfreimd. Münzmeister Hans Schulmeister. Bindenschild von Leuchtenberg, darüber die Jahreszahl * 1528 *//Gekrönter Doppeladler, auf der Brust zweifeldiges Wappen (Österreich/Burgund). R Winz. Schrötlingsfehler, fast vorzüglich. (Germany, landgraviate of Leuchtenberg, John IV, 1487-1531, ten kreuzer of 1528, Pfreimd mint. Obverse: arms of Leuchtenberg, date above; reverse: crowned double headed eagle supporting the impaled arms of Austria and Burgundy. Rare, planchet defects, about extremely fine.)"

The landgrave of Leuchtenberg was a considerable power in the Upper Palatinate in the Middle Ages but never succeeded in becoming a direct suffragan of the emperor. When the dynasty lapsed in 1646, the landgraviate was annexed to Bavaria, where it remains to this day. This type is listed for 1527-28 along with another ten kreuzer with a two digit date (KM MB22). It was the only time this denomination was issued. One thaler was sixty kreuzer.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 4.77-5.72 g, silver or billon, 29 mm diameter; this specimen 5,64 g.

Catalog reference: KM MB20, Friedl 82 b.
