Künker sale 386, lot 5300

This specimen was lot 5300 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €260 (about US$336 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"LAUENBURG, HERZOGTUM, Georg II. von Braunschweig-Calenberg-Hannover, 1727-1760. 16 Schilling (Mark) 1738, Clausthal. Münzmeister Christian Philipp Spangenberg. Sehr schön. (duchy of Lauenburg, George II of Hannover, 1727-60, sixteen schilling or mark of 1738, Clausthal mint. Very fine.)"

Lauenburg is on the lower Elbe next to Hamburg. It was a fragment of the old duchy of Saxony of Hohenstaufen times and its dukes regarded themselves as the senior branch of the family. When that dynasty fell extinct in 1689, the duchy passed to Brunswick-Luneburg, whose electors ruled it until 1813. The Hanoverians struck coins for the duchy in 1737-40, including this mark (one-third thaler) and a double mark (two-thirds thaler or gulden).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 8.83 g.

Catalog reference: KM 16, Slg. Dorfmann 131; J. 10; Welter 2654; Smith 194.
