Laos 1988 100 kip
This specimen was lot 1083 in Stephen Album sale 43 (Santa Rosa, CA, May 2022), where it sold for $660. The catalog description[1] noted, "LAOS: People's Democratic Republic, AV 100 kip, 1988, 5-masted sail ship Prussia, mintage of only 500 pieces, NGC graded MS69, R." Wikipedia comments, "Preussen (Preußen in German and as written on the vessel) was a German steel-hulled, five-masted, ship-rigged sailing ship built in 1902 for the F. Laeisz shipping company and named after the German state and kingdom of Prussia. It was the world's only ship of this class with five masts, carrying six square sails on each mast." The ship was wrecked in 1910. As a square-rigger, she would not have looked at all like the sketch on the coin.
