Argentina 1842R 2 escudos rev Eliasberg 1012.jpg

This specimen was lot 1012 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $2300. The catalog description[1] noted, "1842 R 2 escudos. Rioja mint. AU-55 (NGC). Types as above. Medium toned yellow gold with good eye appeal. This is the only readily collectible portrait issue of General Rosas, but is also very scarce. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."

This type struck in Argentina 1842 only and very rare. A similar design was used on silver 2 reales (KM 12) and gold 8 escudos (KM 14). The SCWC warns against deceptive counterfeits.
