Kuwait G93-1914r.jpg

Kuwait, a sheikhdom on the Persian Gulf, was long under the domination of the Ottoman Turks. As the Turkish grip relaxed in the late nineteenth century, Kuwait fell under the "protection" of Great Britain, which used it as a base until 1961, when British troops evacuated and Kuwait was granted independence. The modern coinage dates from that time, wherein 1000 fils = 1 dinar. This specimen was lot 1914 in Goldberg sale 93 (Los Angeles, September 2016), where it sold for $734.37. The catalog description[1] noted, "Kuwait. 100 Dinars, AH1401/1981 PCGS PF69 DC. 20th National Day. Tower/oil field. PCGS graded Proof 69 Deep Cameo." The weight matches a British double sovereign.

Recorded mintage: 10,000.

Specification: 15.98 g, 0.917 fine gold, .4711 troy oz AGW.

Catalog reference: Fr-3; KM-17.
