from the Stack's Bowers 2018 NYINC sale, lot 24282
Kiribati SB118-24282r.jpg

This specimen was lot 24282 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,440. The catalog description[1] noted, "KIRIBATI. 200 Dollars, 2006. NGC PROOF-69 ULTRA CAMEO. Mintage of only 500 pieces. Christmas Island issue with manger scene. Free of tone, haze or fog." This attempt to capitalize on the holiday trade does not seem to have been a success, as it was not repeated. Kiribati, formerly the British colony of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands, is a group of coral islands in the Pacific. It was the scene of some of the fiercest battles of World War Two.

Recorded mintage: 500.

Specification: 31.11 g, 0.999 fine gold, 1 troy oz APW, 40 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-57.
