Kiangnan ND (1897) 5 cents Y-141a
Kiangnan (Jiangnan) Province is situated south of the Yangtze River. It encompasses several well-known cities, such as Nanjing and Shanghai. Mints operated at many times, with a modern facility built in 1897. Later, other mints for copper and silver coins were opened in Shanghai and other cities. The specimen shown was lot 60264 in Ponterio sale 162 (Hong Kong, August 2011), where it sold for $13,145. The catalog description[1] noted, "CHINA. Kiangnan. 3.6 Candareens (5 Cents), ND (1897). 江南省造光緒元寶三分六釐銀幣。Toned. 有包漿。NGC MS-63. Ex: The Frank Robinson Collection." A rare variety exists (Y-141) with a circle around the dragon.
