Stack's Bowers April 2021 Hong Kong sale, lot 53183
from the Mountain Groan Collection

This specimen was lot 53183 in Stack's Bowers Hong Kong auction (Hong Kong, April 2021), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted,

"CHINA. Kiangnan. 3.6 Candareens (5 Cents), ND (1898). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, AU Details Gold Shield. Circled Dragon type. A RARE issue, this example remains boldly detailed with soft gray color in the fields and deeper highlights around some of the peripheral designs. While appearing entirely original, a few inoffensive hairlines are observed when the character side is inspected under magnification, and account for the grade assigned by PCGS. 江南省造光緒元寶三分六釐銀幣。圈中龍。罕見版本,細節深邃,柔美的灰色底版,邊緣設計有深色包漿點綴。全原始品相,字面髮絲刮痕不顯眼,僅在放大鏡下才可見,因而獲此評分"

A five cents without the circle around the dragon also exists (Y-141a) and is slightly more available.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 1.35 g, 0.900 fine silver.
