Kempten 1554 groschen
This specimen was lot 2235 in Sincona sale 80 (Zürich, October 2022), where it sold for 30 CHF (about US$36 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY | Kempten, Stadt, Groschen 1554, Kempten. Mit Titel Karls V [struck in the name of Charles V]. Fine." This type was struck 1552-55 by the free city of Kempten, now in the Bavarian Alps. The abbey of Kempten, whose territory surrounded the town, also issued coins before selling its mint right in 1525. Both the town and the abbey were devastated during the Thirty Years War and never recovered. The SCWC also notes a kreuzer (KM MB 48), 12 kreuzer (KM MB 50) and 20 kreuzer (KM MB 51) from the same period.
