Kaufbeuren 1541 thaler Dav-9344
This specimen was lot 2481 in Sincona Auction 101 (Zürich, October 2025), where it sold for 500 CHF (about US$754 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Kaufbeuren, Stadt, Taler 1541, Kaufbeuren. Mit dem Hüftbild und Titel Karls V. Gutes sehr schön. Gut ausgeprägt. (Germany, city of Kaufbeuren, thaler of 1541, Kaufbeuren mint, with the bust and title of Charles V. Good Very Fine, Well struck.)"
This obscure Swabian town is of no interest to numismatists except for a series of thalers (Dav-9344 thru -9355) struck 1540-52. This type was struck 1540-43 and 1547 and is among the more common thalers of the mid-sixteenth century. These were struck nearly a century before its much larger neighbor, Augsburg, struck any thalers. The region is now part of Bavaria.
