Kashmir in 1942

This specimen was lot 954 in Stephen Album sale 45 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2023), where it sold for $7,200. The catalog description[1] noted, "KASHMIR: Ranbir Singh, 1857-1885, AV 1/5 mohur, Srinagar, VS1932, Takari legend with partial date below // zarb srina[gar sri ragha]nahat ji [saha'i] in Persian, pipal leaf above letters JHS, a lovely mint state example! PCGS graded MS63." This denomination is listed in the SCWC as a ¼ nazarana mohur but Friedberg notes it as a 1/5 mohur. The only other gold coin listed for this state is a one-third mohur from the same ruler (Fr-1257) which is even rarer. Kashmir is now partitioned between Pakistan and India.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very rare.

Specifications: 2.30 g, gold, this specimen 2.29 g.

Catalog reference: KM Y22, Fr-1258.
